Apple introduced the iPhone 14, marking the debut of this new model during the initial presentation of 2022.
The event also centered on Airpods Pro 2, the new Apple Watch, as well as the iPhone 14 Pro.
The distinction is significant because this year, when Apple released the iPhone X in conjunction with the iPhone 8, there was a noticeable difference in functionality between the iPhone 14 and the Pro model, which was certainly more pronounced than the disparity between the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro.
This was more dramatic than anticipated in recent discussions. For now, this article includes only official information from Apple, along with some digressions and references to rumors. We will update it as new news, tests, and technical specifications that have not yet been officially announced become available.
iPhone 14
Apple, similar to many of its rivals, has become accustomed to launching multiple smartphone models at once. The era of Apple introducing just a single new model annually is behind us. There was also a time when the company would unveil two models each year—one standard and one upgraded, regardless of their specific names.
This year, Apple introduced four models of the iPhone 14:
- iPhone 14;
- Plus;
- Pro;
- Pro Max.
As stated earlier, the iPhone 14 falls into this year’s entry-level category. These devices feature adequately sized screens, can capture high-quality photos, and handle the new iOS 16 operating system along with its various new features effortlessly.
Hello to the iPhone 14 Plus and farewell to the mini
The small iPhone that first appeared with the iPhone 12 was in a vulnerable position from the outset, leading many to speculate that there wouldn’t be a new version.
Ultimately, Apple chose to release the iPhone 13 mini, postponing its discontinuation until 2022. In its place, the iPhone 14 Plus emerged, featuring a 6.7-inch display. This isn’t a groundbreaking change; in previous years, when Apple launched both the standard iPhone and the Plus model, the differences were minimal.
This year is no exception, as the iPhone 14 Plus is primarily distinguished from the iPhone 14 by its larger size. Speculations about the iPhone 14 Plus had been circulating since late 2021 and were recently validated by an image of one of its cases. Although the image wasn’t particularly convincing, it turned out to be accurate in essence.
iPhone 14 design and technology
Apple typically doesn’t make drastic changes to its hardware design. Throughout its history, it has only significantly altered the design three times: with the iPhone 4, iPhone 6, and iPhone 12. The introduction of Face ID with the iPhone X brought notable advancements thanks to the full front display, but the general appearance of models from the iPhone 6 to the iPhone 11 has remained consistent.
Apple has consistently implemented minor modifications from one model to the next, which, while not transforming the overall look, have refreshed the details and facilitated the introduction of technological innovations.
For instance, the iPhone 13 is hard to distinguish from the iPhone 12, with the main difference being a larger camera module. The iPhone 14 seems to be following a similar trend.
Colors
The launch of the iPhone 14 wouldn’t feel complete without introducing new colors. This year, purple makes a comeback for both the iPhone 14 and Pro models. If this color sounds familiar, it’s because the iPhone 12 was also released in purple, but the shade this year is expected to be distinct. Apple has chosen to eliminate pink once more, which isn’t too surprising, while keeping the popular flying blue. Additionally, the shades of black (midnight), white (galaxy), and red have also been updated.
Notch is still relevant and evolving
In recent months, discussions have emerged regarding a significant change: the removal of the notch that houses the hardware necessary for Face ID. Since its debut in 2017, the notch has sparked controversy but is gradually gaining acceptance, particularly as Android smartphones have adopted designs featuring a camera embedded in a small display hole.
Hopes for bidding farewell to this notable competitive disadvantage gained momentum when reputable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated in March 2021 that the 2022 iPhone models would forgo the notch in favor of a different design, similar to Android devices.
However, it increasingly appeared that this change would not completely eliminate the notch but rather reduce its size, specifically for the iPhone 14 Pro. It’s important to note that the traditional notch versus the “dot and oval” design of the iPhone 14 Pro will create some fundamental interface distinctions between the two models.
As tech journalist Mark Gurman pointed out, the Pro model incorporates the notch into the interface, displaying various information within it; this feature is known as the dynamic island, which we will discuss in more detail elsewhere.
Photography and Cameras
The anticipation for advancements in photography is always present when a new iPhone is released. For many years, Apple has been meticulously refining camera features. However, it’s well-known that the most cutting-edge options are typically found in the Pro models, leading to concerns that there would be no significant updates for the iPhone 14 this year.
Fortunately, that turned out to be incorrect. The iPhone 14 Pro represents a major leap in the 48-megapixel imaging realm, which has been highly anticipated for months, while the iPhone 14 also makes notable improvements, albeit not as substantial as its “big brother.”
The new main camera on the iPhone 14 boasts a larger sensor and wider aperture, allowing it to capture 49% more light. Even the ultra-wide camera has enhanced low-light performance, reportedly producing photos that are twice as good, according to Apple.
The device’s processor features a new technology called Photonic Engine, which effectively merges the best pixels from various exposures into one image prior to compression, thereby retaining more data and enhancing color, brightness, naturalness, and detail.
Additionally, Apple has introduced a new video stabilization feature in the iPhone 14 called Motion Mode, designed to significantly minimize vibrations and unwanted movements while recording video on the go.
Front Camera
The iPhone 14’s front camera introduces several enhancements: the aperture has been widened from f/2.2 to f/1.9, and it now features an autofocus system instead of a fixed focal length.
These upgrades allow for improved depth of field effects in portrait mode for both photos and videos, while also enhancing the quality of video calls on Apple FaceTime and other popular video calling and conferencing platforms.
iPhone 14 Screen
For months, there have been speculations about all 2022 iPhone models featuring a ProMotion display with refresh rates of up to 120Hz. However, it was clear from the beginning that this feature would be exclusive to the Pro models.
The upcoming iOS 17.2 update will introduce changes to the interface, which we will discuss in an upcoming article. This update will include extensive customization options, allowing Pro users to enable an always-on display.
In contrast, the iPhone 14 is equipped with a standard LTPS OLED display without ProMotion and a 120Hz refresh rate, similar to the iPhone 13. Analyst Ross Young suggests that Apple’s decision was influenced by a shortage of the necessary displays and components, but there is also an intent to differentiate between the two models.
Inside the iPhone 14
From a hardware standpoint, making predictions has been relatively straightforward in recent years. Since the introduction of the original iPhone, Apple has consistently upgraded the primary processor with each new model. This trend continues this year… to some extent.
CPU A15X
The A16 Bionic, which is the successor to the A15 Bionic used in all iPhone 13 models, is exclusive to the Pro versions of the iPhone 14. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 14 continues to utilize the A15 Bionic, but it’s not exactly the same chip as in the iPhone 13. According to Ming-Chi Kuo’s tweet, it’s a modified version that features a new graphics core.
This decision may be influenced by the high costs of components, manufacturing processes, and materials, as discussed further below. Retaining the older, albeit slightly enhanced processor in the iPhone 14 while reserving the new chip for the Pro models likely has strategic market implications, allowing Apple to better justify the price increase for the Pro versions.
Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that the A15 in the iPhone 14 includes a new image processor that enables all the necessary features for the updated camera.
iPhone 14 internal storage
With the introduction of the iPhone 13 Pro models, Apple introduced a 1TB storage option, and there are now speculations that the upcoming Pro update may include a 2TB variant. However, these rumors about the new storage capacity have not been confirmed and did not come to fruition.
In reality, the iPhone 14 maintains the same storage options as before, offering 128 GB, along with higher capacities of 256 GB and 512 GB.
Charging at 30W
Discussions about 30W charging for the iPhone 14 have been ongoing for several months. There has yet to be any official confirmation regarding the release of the new models.
As we update this article, it remains uncertain whether Apple chose not to highlight the increase in charging power or if it is not applicable to the Pro or iPhone 14.
Satellite Communication
The iPhone 14 Pro is the first smartphone capable of connecting to a satellite network. This emergency feature, which has been discussed since last year, was initially thought to be introduced with the iPhone 13. The technology utilizes low Earth orbit satellites to enable users to send messages to emergency contacts when there is no cellular signal or coverage, bypassing traditional phone operators.
Until recently, it was believed that Apple would not launch this system with the iPhone 14, even though they were known to be working on it. However, in the days leading up to the product reveal, Tim Farrar, a satellite communications consultant at California-based Media and Finance Associates, expressed confidence that the service would be announced in partnership with Globalstar.
The event invitation design, featuring space-related themes, hinted at this development. Now, with the iPhone 14 Pro, users in remote areas without cellular access can communicate in emergencies.
The system is intricate, involving specialized routing technology, a radio triangulation setup, and a platform that gathers the necessary information to send emergency messages while minimizing bandwidth use. Currently, this emergency messaging feature is only available in the United States and Canada.
Accident Detection
The iPhone 14 has the capability to automatically recognize when you are involved in an accident. This crucial feature, inspired by the Apple Watch, is significant because many road accidents occur when victims veer off the road or collide with stationary objects, rather than hitting other vehicles.
To enhance the accuracy of this function, Apple has utilized publicly available data on actual accidents, which the smartphone’s intelligence compares with sensor readings.
The iPhone 14 detects accidents using a new high-gravity accelerometer that can record intense accelerations or decelerations of up to 256g, a high dynamic range gyroscope that tracks abrupt changes in direction, and sensors that monitor pressure fluctuations in the cabin caused by airbag deployment.
Additionally, the microphone can gauge sound levels at the moment of impact. Similar to the Apple Watch, if an accident is detected, the phone will prompt the user for confirmation. If there is no response, it will automatically place an emergency call.
iPhone 14 Pricing
When discussing the price, there were concerns for several months that the iPhone 14 would be more expensive than the iPhone 13. However, optimism emerged regarding the base model, even in the face of global inflation and rising energy costs. Ultimately, there were no changes to the pricing structure, and it remained relatively stable.
